So, while visiting my family in Portland, OR, I arranged visits to as many pole studios as I could fit in during my 3 weeks in the Pacific North West of the USA. In 3 weeks, I had to really pack it in; each visit was a flying one. Of course it was; why would it be any other kind of visit from the director of The Flying Studio?? I dearly wish I’d been able to spend more time at each studio on my road trip. While I was based in Portland, OR, I did however manage to spend plenty of time as a pole student, which I absolutely loved (I’ll talk about that more later on).

[I have decided that I am determined to attend pole classes here in the UK – which up until this point I have found difficult as some pole dance teachers do not embrace other teachers attending their classes - the only available classes were masterclasses by visiting instructors. I believe that pole dance teachers have just as much right to attend classes as everyone else and should not have to dampen their skills in order to do so. You may not like my saying this, but this is my experience and I intend to change it].

The Pole Dance Community (PDC) also asked me to be an ambassador in order to forge strong links in the community between the USA and the UK. I hope that as a result, more USA pole schools will join and back the PDC as well as visit us here!

All of the studios that I visited in the US as both a teacher and a student were very welcoming – I would say with open arms, but in the US a handshake is the norm; well it is here too, but as you know us polers are a bit ‘lovie’ and we like to hug and kiss.

There were a few pole studios that I regret I couldn’t go to South of Seattle and also West of Seattle as time was limited. The tour included: Kennewick, WA; Spokane, WA; Seattle, WA; Federal Way, WA; Tacoma, WA; Olympia, WA.

Pole Classes in America!
Upon arrival in the US, I gave myself approximately a day to settle in before heading to one of Ecdysiast’s Saturday drop in practice classes. Ecdysiast studio opened in 2008 and is based in SE Portland, OR. There I met co-owner Martina Thornhill who of course was lovely and I was welcome to attend the session. There were just us at the session so we shared ideas on pole moves and Martina gave me some ideas on new stretches brought in from her contortion training. Martina’s background in club dancing gives her good insight into pole dance and reflects in her dance style which is very fluid and concise as is her method of teaching. [When I asked about which strip clubs to visit, she pointed me in the direction of a few local strip clubs that would have been interesting to see, but I couldn’t fit it in, in the end, gutted! Martina warned me that they were fully nude in the US, which of course I knew. Perhaps I will check them out next time]. Ecdysiast studio has 8 standard diameter brass poles. They were 12 possibly 14 feet high. These were very grippy and so I was able to try out some newer moves.

I met co-owner Shannon Gee separately when I returned from my studio tour road trip and I only regret that I didn’t find time to go back again as I really enjoyed the class. Shannon has an aptitude for choreography and tricks also, which made me enjoy the class all the more. Like Martina, she welcomed me to the class and was very open to my attending. I took the opportunity to practice things on my non dominant side, which I like to do but it was much easier since they were brass poles. Just being part of a class is novel and fun for me. We had a great long stretch at the end, which was most welcome.

After only being in Portland a few days, I first met Freya Samantha Ruter Sonnichsen of Brassy Butterfly when I attempted to attend an aerial drop in class in the same building at Night Flight Aerial run by Stephanie Lopez (I did manage to get to one of Stephanie’s cool classes eventually). The drop in class wasn’t running, so we (my mum and I) had a look around the building and she read out one of the signs on the door…‘Brassy Butterfly’. My ears pricked up and I rushed around the corner to where she was and could hear a class going on. We decided to wait to see if there was one that I could join and were just discussing it when Freya’s hubby arrived and said; sure I could join a class. Freya appeared a few minutes later and seemed a little surprised to see me until she realised who I was standing in front of her. We had a little skill share and then I joined in the next class. I went back to Freya’s a good few times either side of my studio tour road trip and loved it every time. There are some great girls who learn there. Brassy Butterfly’s poles reach nearly fifteen feet and are high grade stainless steel tubing coated with a special translucent top-coat to provide maximum grip (as it says on their website). They are also quite narrow poles, which I really liked. Freya’s classes are fun, silly, rude and really open. We swapped American and English words for women’s genitalia....maybe you had to be there….

Freya does a great job at distracting the girls from the burn when they are working hard on the floor. The pole classes are great, but so are her sexy strength classes! Freya is so strong and a beautiful dancer and technician. I found her a beautiful person too and she is such an inspiration as a both a person and a teacher. Brassy Butterfly is based in N Portland, OR and was founded in March 2006 by Aine Inkk.

Near the end of my trip, I attended classes at Summer Morris and Kristin Mcintosh-Nelson’s Diva Den . Summer started teaching home parties in 2006 and opened her first studio in 2007. I attended level 3 classes by Randi and Sophie and level 4 pole class by Summer, where the girls were fabulous, there were plenty of stainless (and a couple of brass) poles that were nice and high and great to work on. You know when fishermen talk about how big the fish was that they caught? Well not to exaggerate, but the poles in US studios are high (again 12-14 feet)! Not as high as my outdoor pole though!!

Diva Den teaches in their new studio in SW Portland, OR which has a huge pole room and 2 other studios within the same building offering everything from Zumba by Rosella and Keli (which incidentally was amazing! None of the Zumba classes that I have attended here in the UK match them) to

Aerial Yoga (like me!) and Aerial Silks (also like me!).

All of the studios in Portland are teaching different styles of pole dance from different points of view and I can see that there are classes to suit everyone.

Unfortunately there were a few more studios South of Portland that I didn’t manage to see, but I hope to next visit!

Portland!
Apparently Portland is known as ‘Pornland’ as referred to by the local news when reporting on teenage prostitution and the number of strip clubs in the city (of course the media would link the two). From talking to the teachers that I met, there is still a way to go – I actually think that the UK is further along with acceptance of pole dancing by the general public as something other than what is seen in strip clubs the US.

Portland apparently has the most amounts of strip clubs in the USA. Tina Morreli (Pole Fitness North West, Federal Way, WA) confirmed this when I asked her about it, she said; ‘Oh yes, Portland…mall…strip club…diner…strip club…mall…strip club.’

Don’t let this spoil your view of Portland though. It is a great and diverse metropolis, full of any kind of activity or relaxation you could ask for. It seemed not unlike the UK to me, I felt quite at home. The weather is not that dissimilar, maybe a bit hotter! The beach is only a couple of hours from Portland and I spent 5 days in my uncle’s beach cabin (house) after my studio tour road trip eating S’mores round the camp fire, getting a golden tan and windburned from the whipped up sand, collecting sand dollars (which amazingly survived being crushed on the way home to the UK) paddling in the sea a bit, but as I remembered from my last trip, the sea is painfully cold!

As for the Pacific North West, I really got to see the place. As you studio owners out there know, studio rental space is expensive and we need high ceilings that are not found in newer buildings. I saw the older parts of towns that I may not have seen, had I not been visiting all these pole studios. Pole gave me a reason to see Washington and Oregon State. After a few tips from one of my cousins and a map from my Uncle, I planned my route on paper (and GPS – that’s SatNav to you and me).

Road Trip!
After picking my little Chevy up on the Monday, I headed out early on Wednesday morning up Interstate 84 (I-84) following Hood River and past The Dalles and then up I-82 to W Kennewick, WA (about a 4 hour drive East from Portland) to meet Eva Carpenter at her studio at 10am to introduce her to the silks. I stayed for 2 hours and we split the time between silks and pole. Eva is one of those people who picks up everything very quickly and has great form - she was such a pleasure to teach – my first US student!

Eva started pole dancing February of 2008. She entered Miss Pole Dance Fitness Northwest 2008 at the Royale Lounge in Bellingham, WA. She came 4th. I can’t wait to see what Eva does next as she is pretty adept on that pole!

En route to Kennewick the scenery is stunning. Wow, huge canyons and gaping rivers opened up to reveal breathtaking views around each and every corner!

After saying goodbye to Eva, I headed for Spokane, WA up the I-90 (If you look up any of these Interstate highways, you will see how long they really are – I-90 goes across the entire US West to East, more than 3000 miles).

Chastitie Lujan is so warm-hearted. She invited me to stay at her home in Spokane without ever meeting me. When I arrived at 5pm, her boys were waiting excitedly to meet me and show me all their pole skills. They had met Pantera previously as she had stayed with Chastitie while visiting too. I shared a room with one of the boys’ pet hermit crab and met her dog, cats and husband too! They made me feel at home and we had a good chat about the pole dance world and pole dance in general. Chastitie founded Pole Dance International Magazine with her husband Anthony – they interviewed me for the tour during my brief stay:

Chastitie has done pole-related dance for 7 years, adding the acrobatics 2 years ago. She competes, trains and performs on an international level and she is a regular at pole dance related important events. (Pole Fitness Association - PFA website). Chastitie is pretty strong – she can hold moves for aaages!

I taught a silks workshop at Chastitie’s Goddess Arts Academy plus pole which was great fun – all her students loved it too. I participated in one of Chastitie’s beginner classes aswell – she went through safety aspects and fun spins – I found her explanations of the moves very thorough and all of the women taking part had great fun! I was sad to leave as I was just settling in, but I needed to head out to Seattle. The scenery when travelling from Spokane to Seattle was absolutely amazing. I stopped numerous times to take pictures, but I haven’t included them as you cannot capture what I experienced on a few digital images. I also started to feel tired while driving across, so stopped at a truck stop for coffee and eggs. The best ever!

I hit I-90 again and followed it to it’s Western terminus at Seattle which took around 5 hours and went immediately to meet with Krisha and one of her students, Paige at Pole for the Soul in NW Seattle which was a great, fun way to start the Seattle leg of the tour. We jam packed the lesson incorporating all the elements of pole dancing. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching Paige and Krisha, so easy. Krisha has a lovely, quiet style to her pole dance, very endearing to watch. At the end I took a long stretch while watching Krisha prepare a pole and belly dance number that she was going to perform later on. It looked really good, I have to say! I stayed in Best Western hotel in the centre of Seattle, had a long hot soak and went out for dinner at the Flying Fish restaurant (appropriate!). The food was very fresh and very welcome. I just had time for a wander around Seattle before heading to Tacoma, WA to meet with Noelle Wood and her students at Poledello to teach a doubles workshop at her beautiful studio. Noelle has 13 years of classical dance training and it shows in her beautiful, lyrical style. I think Noelle has a wicked sense of humour, she said ‘ello guvna’ to me in a Dick Van Dyke kind of way which I thought was pretty funny, but perhaps I didn’t show it as I was starting to feel a little wacked out from all the travelling – I wish I could have spent more time with them all. Noelle, Laura, Stacey and Natalie were all very talented ladies indeed and were such a pleasure to teach. After returning to the UK, I was pleased to hear that Noelle has recently won second place in (East meets West) EMW TriPole Challenge! The gals at Poledello tell me that they are still practicing the moves and are really enjoying doubles work. After farewells to the Poledello girls, I left to meet Tina.

Tina Morreli, well what can I say about Tina and her studio?! This lady has more pole dance titles than I care to mention, but I’ll tell you anyhow! Wow, she has trophies and sashes up on the wall from all her various pole dance wins. Tina has a beautiful pink and black studio located in Federal Way, WA called Pole Fitness North West that has many more brass poles than I could count, brilliant!

Tina won "Showgirl of the Year" 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 & 1997. She won "Deja Vu Polympics Washington State" 1993, 1995, 1997, & 2007. Tina won "Deja Vu National Showgirl of the Year" 1995. She also won "Deja Vu National Polympics" 1997 & "Deja Vu National Showgirl of the Year" 1997 (she was the first and only woman to hold both titles in the same year). In 1998 Tina was awarded "Deja Vu Lifetime Achievement Award". (Pole Fitness Association - PFA website)

It was such an honour to teach someone who has been in the pole dance world for so long and she is a great inspiration to me for this fact. I will always take lessons as I am now a perpetual student as well as teacher. Tina was generous enough to give me a run through of the kind of things that she teaches the girls at the studio. Tina, Jana and the girls kept going like they had endless amounts of energy and enthusiasm for their love of pole dancing!

I had to leave Tina and the girls to teach a spinning pole workshop at Divine Movement Dance. Angi Cardwell and the women at her studio have some truly beautiful movement style going on. I was pleased to see Paige again at this workshop (she has some skill on the pole!).

Some of the group remained for free dance (what I call freestyle) and I joined them in the style of the studio. I really enjoyed this sharing experience. I hope I wasn’t too tired to give you my best – but everyone was smiling so I will take that as a yes.

Next day I travelled I-5 to meet with Trisha Hatfield-Graves of Pilates at Play, whom I felt like I knew already due to our numerous emails to each other over the last few months. The studio is great, again, lots of space and high poles. Trisha and Cally treated me to one of their famous, or if it’s not, it should be! famous warm-ups – I’m not going to tell you, you will have to try it for yourself – fun, fun, fun is all I’m going to say! Pilates at Play studio is a terrific studio with plenty of height to the poles. I introduced my style of pole dance and aerial arts to the Pilates at Play students. They loved the sessions! The Teriyaki was yummy! We had good giggle - Mollie and the girls cracked me up. I did a short studio performance for them to MIA Paper Planes as it reminded me of home.

After a lovely evening meal out, we bade goodbye amidst a parade featuring Paul Bunyan and a few of his friends followed by a few wrong turns, then eventually I was back on I-5 and to Portland in 2hrs – not bad!

Once back in Portland, I just had time for a trip Washington County Fair, where I got my feet inked (Mendhi) and Saw Warrant perform their famous ‘Cherry Pie’!

I took Route 101 to have a well deserved break at the beach. The most energetic activity I partook in was building camp fires and climbing Mt.Neahkahnie. A final fun end to my trip was taking part in more pole classes at Brassy Butterfly; the last one being such a fun session with all the girls I met at my first session there.

I’ve been doing Aerial Yoga and Acro Yoga for a while now and it was really cool to meet up with some others who practiced it in the park in Portland!

Pole Dance Style
What you all want to know about, eh? As you might expect, Sheila Kelly style does have an influence here. I would go so far as to say that it has as much influence as Martha Graham had in contemporary dance. Don’t get me wrong though, she (Sheila) is not the only influence; there are clearly many different styles at work here. The use of flat shoes has increased since my last research, but there is also not the stigma associated between instructors of the use of heeled shoes. It is widely accepted as the norm among pole dancers, but there is still some work to be done before the public sees it the same way in the US.

Each of the studios that I either taught at or participated at all had a unique approach to their practice and teaching style.

All of the teachers were united in their passion for their art, passion for their students, recognised that each was teaching differently and also spoke highly of one another as well as being inspired by each other. They were united in their wanting to improve and further their pole dance knowledge and repertoire. Most are part of pole dance organisations united in their goal to bring the benefits of pole dancing to the world’s attention.

I just want to say a big thank you to all the wonderful pole teachers and very talented pole students who put their faith in me and welcomed me to their studios having never met me previously! You have all inspired me in many ways! Including wanting to run an American Style Pole Dance Workshop!

Thankfully I can still keep in touch with everyone on facebook and reminisce about my trip. So many pole dancers are doing aerial stuff now; it's so great! I'm so glad. One pole dancer whom I admire very much mentioned to me a while ago that she was enjoying being back in Australia as the facilities in the UK are not as good as they are over there. This is why I wanted to push for more aerial involvement. Although the pole is my primary tool, I think of all the equipment as basically having the same principles, though I still think the pole rocks the most!! Not only that, if there were to be an Olympics involving pole, the Aussies would kick our collective arses. How embarrassing if you consider that the UK is the pole dancing capital of the world! I suppose it is a matter of quality over quantity as the Aussies are being taught by a much smaller number of extremely talented pole dancers.

Below is footage from the Studio Launch in Derby on the 22nd September (despite the fact that I have been teaching in there for a couple of months now!).

My students from both Derby and Leicester came over as did Nicki, but no Susie as alas she was travelling.

Peter also came to showcase and help everyone have a play on the aerial equipment. He really added to the atmosphere that was so encouraging. Here's some footage of everyone having a play:

This is my latest performance last weekend in Sussex, which I really enjoyed! The previous performance in Wales was quite serious and balletic, so I wanted to do something this time with a totally different feel. I like to keep it simple so that everyone can relate to the performance, beside the fact that it's performed on a podium, haha!

This is my studio performance at the launch of the second studio in Derby. Trying to keep to things that everyone has learned so that it is in context:

Anyone struggling with transition into the superman? You might find this useful:

I have another lot of workshops and performance coming up. Very challenging as we all live very far apart. I need to video the routine and then post the link to them so they can learn it!

I've lots of exciting projects coming - watch this space!

The studio, the slideshow and the musical education

Well now, behind every picture there's a story, so I'll let my slideshow tell it. This will be a celebration of pole dance as requested by many! The general consensus I got from the community was that they would like to showcase their talents instead of a competition. Not only that, many were thinking of running their own showcase. Well, I have a venue, love meeting up with my fellow pole dancers...it's a no brainer! Already there are some excellent Pole Dance Performers confirmed. Most have said yes immmediately and there are a few that I need to get around to asking.

The performers will be made up of high standard pole dancers including The Flying Studio teachers plus a few of my students also. It will be a ticketed event and I expect it to sell out (to pole dance students and friends and family of the performers) as there is limited ticket availability. Each performer will recieve a purse derived from a percentage of ticket sales (this idea was suggested by Sam from www.theartofdance.co.uk some time ago when we were discussing performance). There will be safety guidelines for performers and possibly a track time limit (depending on numbers). More details will follow on this...

Another exciting announcement is that in September we will be running aerial classes under the same format as the pole dancing (i.e tasters and courses).

By the way, here's some vids of last month's performances at Moxters of Rock Festival:

This first one is sideways through time...myself and Jane (ex-Hawkwind dancer). Hoping to do more doubles stuff again next time.

The New

So much has happened in the last month; I almost want to bullet point it to save an enormous essay! A lot of change has happened since my last blog, but being a complete neophile, this makes me happy. Much negativity and frustration has affected me, but instead of holding my head in my hands and giving up, I have fought hard against it to allow a positive creativity to emerge in the world of Strictly Pole Dancing. Therefore, henceforth we shall now be known as.... The Flying Studio!

Now one year on from the launch of the Leicester studio and classes already running in Derby, there are two talented instructors on board the good spaceship (Assassins' Influence!) 'The Flying Studio' who are embracing the new direction. Things are very positive and we are a tight team. Here is how The Flying Studio at Darley Abbey, Derby looks right now. I am so excited about this space...it's going to be fantastic!

I am hoping to launch and have classes running there by the end of July. Watch this space...

Here is a recent feature on an ITV show that a friend of mine kindly captured and sent to me. Britain's Got Pole!! Ha ha!

I was a judge for the Pole Divas 2007 competition at many of the heats, an online judge and also a judge at the final in Manchester, phew!

I have been dancing with Assassins of Silence and having a lot of fun. Like most people I meet because of my dancing, they have had some influence on me musically. I am glad that I am able to have this plasticity. They're having me back for another gig in August.

Oh, I also danced at Zanzibar Nightclub, which again was a lot of fun. Note to self: 'stop neglecting the blog!'

Where do I start? So much has happened since then! I have auditioned for numerous television shows earlier on this year with much positive feedback from producers and directors regarding the following piece. I got word of a show called 'Britain's Got Talent' (fully aware that they wanted audition gaff fodder....) and went ahead and auditioned anyway. I couldn't miss this opportunity for a platform to show a wider audience an alternative view of pole dancing. As a performer I feel it is my duty to attend these auditions and I feel compelled to represent pole dancers in this positive way. I find this kind of opportunity very rewarding as much of the performance work that I do is in this context. Here is the piece:

In this last 12 months pole dancing has moved on greatly with many pole dancers and instructors networking all over the country. This is a great step forward as most contact previously in the pole dance world was via the internet. Although the internet is great for initial contact; I see it as a means to an end as there is no substitute for face to face contact and the sharing of information. Pole dancing has a steady stream of media coverage from both positive and negative angles with much more exposure to come due to the hard work of each pole dancer out there with a common goal creating a positive cumulative effect.

A certain amount of versatility is required...

...when performing pole dancing, as no gig is ever the same as the last. I always keep an open mind as I never know how I will be recieved. How exciting! It's great to perform again and again to such large audiences made up largely of people never exposed to pole dancing of such high quality and also in this form before. It truly is inspirational the way that I am recieved and gives validity to what I am trying to acheive both in my self expression and in the art itself.

Sometimes this is a lonely business in which I am becoming known as a maverick and also an innovator. It has always been this way and my slightly lowered tone reflects the continued non support of what I do by two people close to me; my mother and my oldest sister. My life experiences make me strong and forge ahead and continue to be who I am.

My latest performances have been interesting and as my self development is ongoing they have helped me decide even further the niche into which my dancing fits. I love performing as part of a cabaret (after all this is the style of my act), this truly is my forte (at the moment at least; I must not be rigid with my options). I always try to gain footage of my performances, not only as a record of what I am doing, but also to remind me of what was performed and also gain more feedback on my performances (I concentrate so much that I don't hear the appreciation first time around). A snapshot of some of my favourites of late were this first video which was taken back in September with an audience of around 1200 people both seated and standing around a dance floor above which my pole was situated on stage in a large venue. I regularly perform for this institution which I am extremely pleased about.

This second video was taken in November at a venue that I gasped at upon entering and hope to return to at some point. Attached to a hall was a marquee of mammoth proportions with a roof lit with stars. My seated audience was very close in proximity and all around so projection was needed to all.

Lastly, the video below was taken at a Christmas party. Again, it was a great venue; perfect for my performance. The difference between formal balls and parties are enormous and I can definately say that I prefer the former given a choice.

Advice for an Enjoyable Pole Dancing Journey

I don't believe that there is only so much you can do on a pole. The possibilities are endless. I think of it like driving on a journey, only I don't have a map or even know where I am going. Though I have some idea where I would like to. Even though I don't know where I am going, I am enjoying myself, as I like being on this journey. If I get to the end of one road, I choose a different turning and take that route. Who knows where it will go?

I would have to find another discipline to focus on if I felt if I could do all I could on the pole. Right now the thought is inconcievable and it would be a very sad event too. There are so many different forms of movement that can be incorporated and music options are infinite, that if I believed that nothing more could be done, for what reason would there be to try to achieve more? Don't rush your pole dancing journey. Enjoy your progression. A slow gentle journey is way more enjoyable than a rushed, driven competition. A little competitiveness is good for you and admiration of other pole dancers is a good thing, but too much is destructive and can lead to bitterness and resentment. When looking upon a pole dancer who you think is great, do not try to be like them although you can learn from them, be yourself and be the best that you can be. Be the best that you can be and don't ever forget why you started pole dancing in the first place.

Strip clubs and their links to pole dancing

Strip club owners and strip club goers trying to normalise stripping and strip club culture and present it as harmless fun by using the rise of pole dance lessons and pole dance schools as an example. Some when performing pole dance are normalising sexual behaviour and not presenting their pole dancing as a dance form that will ever be taken seriously.

I feel that you should explore floor work and sensual movement in order to progress artistically, but it should not be performed on stage to a 'lay' audience, if ever pole dancing is to be taken seriously as an art form separate from what is performed in strip clubs. I also think although in private you should wear whatever attire you so choose, If you are presenting pole dancing as something separate from what is performed in strip clubs, you should dispense with the shoes and raunchy clothes, sexual behaviour and refrain from removing clothing otherwise it will never be seen as separate or taken seriously.

I am not suggesting that pole dancing becomes sterile as any female dance form can be sensual and beautiful and females seen as objects regardless of intent. It is the intent that is important.

If you perform pole dancing anywhere other than in a strip club and want pole dancing to be taken seriously you have a responsibility to do this. Otherwise it will never happen.

Please discuss.

Polergirl!

So what's happened since July?

There have been some more additions (more lighting and mirrors) to the studio and there has been a pole party (for all my poling friends and students) at the studio. There are many birthdays in my family in August (they are one after the other!) My birthday has passed (with many a pole dance performed on the night!) and my nanna had her 90th, not long after mine, woohoo! No poling for her, but I bet she would given the chance!

There are still a number additions needed for the studio: The signage on the exterior of the building and of course my silks are yet to be rigged! Once these are done I am looking forward to taking more pictures of the interior as well as the exterior for the website.

The school is taking part in a world record attempt in pole dancing and I have met a great photographer who will be doing some shots with me soon. I have met with some great instructors and will be jamming with them shortly!

I've got a number of great gigs coming up over the next few weeks and months that I'm really excited about!

By day, I am usually the pole dancing, multi-tasking wonderwoman. Recently, I have become Polergirl! Pole dancing superhero in hotpants on rollerskates! This is inspired by my search for all things new and that will stretch me in relation to my pole dancing. This is actually my first attempt:

This next one was taken after improvements to the studio and is a little slower..

On a recent trip home to London, I got a few snaps on the tube...

As usual, I am just enjoying myself, my body, what it can do and our time together..... :-)

The week before, while on a walk I found this swing....

Yes, it is the same vest top.

Cream, Hula Hoops and the Eurythmics

The past two days have been really productive! As every pole dancer knows, how you feel about the music is all important to your self expression. So with that in mind and the studio being such a great place, I absolutely love training in there. The following films are based around some tracks that are some of my current favourites!

Firstly, Cream (masters of rhythm)

I really enjoyed dancing to this also.

Lastly, I have taken the hula hoops to a new level!

The Gay Cabaret Night Footage

Here is the footage from The Gay Cabaret Night at the theatre! Sorry, this will be a short one as I have very busy with classes, running and updating the website (there are a few more updates I must attend to next week actually). Being involved with the organisation of the Miss Pole Dance UK competition is also great; I can't wait to meet loads more like minded pole dancers! The finals are in August (held in Newquay) this year and I am really looking forward to it.

So I am performing my Bond themed routine at The Gay Cabaret this evening. I first performed this piece last year and have performed it a number of times since. I am so excited to be asked to do it again though as it is my favourite piece! I love the 'Y', such a nice theatre. There are lots of other great acts on so I hope I can watch most of them before I have to go and warm up. Hope I get a chance to speak to some of the other performers too, especially the performer on corde lisse (rope). I heard he has to dash at the end of his set to catch a train , so we'll see......

Oh my gosh, nearly forgot!! My younger sister is watching me perform pole dancing on stage for the first time tonight!

Get in is at 4pm, so I'm going to relax, maybe do some vacuuming before my sis arrives. Great news! My Dyson is not broken after all; it just shut off due to being too hot! Phew!

The Studio is Open!! I feel like things are taking so long; but in reality progress is good. I had some help today which made things a little easier and we moved everything that wasn't too heavy.

Once the space was a bit clearer, I was able to finish some of the essential jobs, like vacuming for example. ;)

All that remains to be moved are these big runners and a cross trainer (oh, and some weights too). The runners must weigh 100kilos each!!

Yes, I know there is a big hole in the wall! That doorway will be finished very shortly. Here's a better look. These steps are one of the great vantage points of the studio suitable for filming or photography. They also lead out to a patio area which I really like when I want a breath of fresh air. One step at a time here....

So the area that the runners are going to be transported through can't be decorated yet. It is pointless at the moment as the equipment is so heavy that my work would be ruined when they are moved out. I have left the walls and floor area [see here] where I think it may get damaged.

Okay, so later I put a pole up and gave it a try (all is well). I have decided that there will be 4 poles in the studio for now...

Here's how we left the place this afternoon. Remember those first shots from weeks ago?

I am back in the studio tomorrow to work on it some more as the first taster session is next Saturday.

I finally got the stuck pole apart. After trying everything, nothing changes the laws of Physics (duh!), so now it has 2 extra holes in it.

Oh, I nearly forgot to say! I was featured on the BBC website this week!

The Studio is coming along

It's looking rather good. I have decided that it will be partially carpeted and have partial wooden floor exposed. I have been sanding the floor today after I ripped up the old carpet and it's a beautiful original floor. That coupled with the brickwork, it's looking more and more like a 'fame' studio every day! Some of my students have been wondering why there will be carpet in the studio. They will be very happy when it saves their knees! It will also stop them from slipping if they have heels on at some point. They will also work harder due to increased friction on the floor.

I would like it to be just so before I open, but I may have to continue to add little extras once I have launched. At present I can't decide on whether to have 4 or 5 poles in the studio.

I have been pondering installing silks (purely for selfish reasons) in the studio for some time. Initial investgations are very positive. I might have to wait for my trapeze till a little later though, riggers and rigging are not cheap! Don't touch my silks.

Not Strictly Pole Dancing...

But they are new additions to my skills repertoire, so definately worth talking about. I have been training in aerial arts for some time now and as I suspected there is much crossover. The warm ups and cool downs are extremely similar to those that I use in class and in my own personal training. For now, I only have pictures of myself on trapeze as I forget to get someone to take pictures. Obviously my tutor is my spotter, so she can't be taking pictures. I particularly like trapeze and chinese pole, but most of all tissu/silks is the discipline that I prefer.

Training in these disciplines is so relevant to what I teach and perform. Much more appropriate than an E.T.M. qualification.

One of my poles is stuck together, again!

Out of the 4 poles that I own, two of them are stuck together and I cannot get them apart. WD40 is useless as it is too thin. I am taking my time trying to get it apart (if I can at all) this weekend otherwise I will end up flinging them out of the window.

It's not so bad when the 2 main pieces stick together as at least I can get them in the car. What I hate is when this happens. I burst out laughing during this journey at the utter ridiculousness of it. As did many people at the traffic lights. I am consoling myself in the knowledge that soon these poles will be permanently up in the studio. It's really great that they are portable, but it's not quite the portable dream that I had hoped for. They really can't take the wear of being constantly put up and taken down and neither can my nerves for that matter. I think I'll keep one aside, so that I have one pole freed up for gigs. This pole problem is almost like an unsolvable one. There is always a trade off. If I ever needed motivation to continue with the development of the studio, this is it.

While I was distracted by the 'pole sticking out of the car' situation and unloading the poles once at home, I neglected to bring inside the second pole that is stuck together. So it remained outside all night. Oops.

Strictly Pole Dancing in The Independent -

I'm annoyed. Here we go again, another misinformed, confused, pseudo feminist. This time it is Joan Smith.

Patrick Kielty should be ashamed of himself for his comments; but hey, would you expect anything less from someone who always sees sleaze, whether it was intended or not. It's his job to be sleazy, he's a comedian. In this case he has only exposed himself as lacking in intelligence. His response is the usual knee jerk reaction to differences in society.

Joan Smith on the other hand has failed in her job to deliver the facts. We are not talking about raunch culture, we are talking about the emergence of a new art form from something formerly only associated with sleaze and she is critical of this? She let her preconcieved ideas cloud the truth about pole dancing. Yes, we are small in number, but our population is ever growing.

Not only is she down on pole dancing, she is also inconsistent in her morality. Little time has passed since belly dancing was regarded as sleazy. To add insult to injury, my dance school name is being thrown around in the press like a rancid pole cloth. My dance school is called STRICTLY POLE DANCING by the way and no, I am not joking, Joan.

Well, the wall is gone

One of the walls in the studio has been knocked down, which means more room!
